Get rid of her! Angela Merkel should face vote over her future, furious German MPs say

The German Chancellor admitted it was a “mistake” to announce new lockdown restrictions for a period of five days over the Easter break apologising to lockdown-weary Germans after the hastily-conceived plan triggered a backlash. The embarrassing U-Turn prompt opposition MP Christian Lindner to urge the Bundestag to issue a vote of no confidence in Ms Merkel. 

He said: “The Chancellor can no longer be sure of the unanimous support of her coalition.

“A vote of confidence in the German Bundestag would be advisable in order to examine the ability of the government of Ms Merkel to act.” 

Dietmar Bartsch, head of the opposition left-wing Linke, also called for a vote of no confidence in Merkel, telling newspapers of the Funke media group: “We now have a veritable crisis of confidence in the political leadership of the country.”
