  • They were discovered on Saturday during a volunteer clean-up event in Robeson County
  • Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said the dogs, which are mostly pit bulls, show no sign of having been involved in dogfighting and no obvious sign of death or injury

Authorities in North Carolina are investigating after 10 dead dogs were discovered wrapped in trash bags and thrown into a roadside ditch.

The dogs, most of which were pit bulls, were found during a volunteer clean-up event in Robeson County Saturday.

‘Sadly and under current investigation was the discovery of 10 dogs (mostly but not all pit-bulls) wrapped in trash bags and thrown alongside a ditch bank,’ Sheriff Burnis Wilkins wrote in a Facebook post.

A veterinarian and the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Animal Cruelty Investigator were called to the location after the dogs were discovered, Wilkins told CNN.

He added that there were no obvious causes of death or signs of injury, and that the vet told investigators the dogs did not appear to have been involved in dogfighting.

‘Such a horrible find but glad the pups will be taken away kindly…Hope they determine how they were killed and if they were euthanized, their bodies simply don’t go to a landfill for scavengers to find.. Many might have been stolen pets,’ one Facebook user commented on Wilkins’ post.

‘Breaks my heart about the puppies.. people doing something like that just don’t care about any life,’ another said.

Robeson County officials are attempting to locate the owner of the dogs and have requested the public call the sheriff’s office on (910) 671-3100 if they have any information on the dogs.
