Two prison officers have been rushed to hospital after an alleged brutal attack by inmates in an incident a union has said ‘could have been avoided.’

One officer was struck in the head when a prisoner kicked open his cell door at the high-security Brisbane Correctional Centre on Monday.

Two other corrections officers were hurt while restraining the two prisoners who were in the lock-up.

The officer who was struck in the head and one of the others were kept overnight in hospital after the alleged attack.

The inmates were moved to the Detention Unit – a confinement room – and the matter will be referred to the Corrective Services Investigation Unit.

The union for police officers in Queensland said the alleged assault was avoidable.

‘This assault could have been avoided if the department had installed the meal hatches we’ve been asking for over the past two years,’ they said.

Queensland Corrective Services said they were investigating the incident.

‘Officer safety is an absolute priority for Queensland Corrective Services, and we are committed to making our prisons as safe as possible for our officers,’ they said.

‘There will be comprehensive review of the circumstances of the incident and management will continue to provide support to the injured staff.’
