Gold Coast dad-of-three Anthony Karos, 48, has been confirmed as one of two men who died in northern NSW over the Easter break.

Karos passed away when he was surfing at the popular Minnie Water Beach near Grafton on Sunday as his family and friends remember him as a ‘beautiful soul’.

Karos is believed to have drowned after the leg-rope from his surfboard became caught on rocks.

A Rescue Helicopter managed to winch Karos from the notoriously tricky surf spot, but he was unable to be revived at the scene.

Burleigh Heads gym Elevation Fitness, where Karos was a regular and popular member due to his zest for life, confirmed the devastating news on their Facebook page.

‘It is with great sadness that we share the passing of a great friend, and one of the most amazing humans you will ever meet,’ the post read, according to the Courier Mail.

‘AK (Anthony Karos) tragically passed away while surfing, one of his great loves.

‘He was larger than life, always ready for a chat, would do anything for anyone and befriended anyone he came across.’

Keros is survived by his wife Trudi and the couple’s three girls – Lili, Lexi and Indi.

Another surfer, 64, also died while surfing at Hat Head, east of Kempsey on the NSW north coast, on Sunday.

The Easter death toll on Australian roads was an alarming 20 people, compared to six people losing their lives in 2020 over the annual four day break.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Karen Webb said all of the deaths on her state’s roads this Easter appeared to be avoidable.

‘One death is one too many,’ she said.

‘The (six) fatal crashes in NSW remain under investigation, but they all look to have been preventable.’

Speeding, not paying attention to the road and using mobile phones while behind the wheel are common causes for road fatalities across Australia.
