That blanket's a bit ruff! Adorable shar pei Harvey looks like a scrunched-up sheet

Whilst this adorably saggy-skinned Shar Pei wears his wrinkles well, his owner says he is anything but low-maintenance.

Six-month-old Harvey, whose furry rolls at first appear more like a bunched-up blanket than a dog, has a weekly pamper routine that is carried out by his loving owner.

Teresa Moll Arguimbau, 22, claims Harvey’s unique folds make him perfect for cuddles, despite the fact they require moisturising every few days and leave him vulnerable to sunburn.

The student lives with her family in Menorca, Spain, along with Harvey and the pooch’s mother Chloe.

Miss Arguimbau said: I am completely crazy about his wrinkles and his skin. It is very soft, and the wrinkles are very beautiful.

‘In fact, one of the things I like the most about Harvey is his wrinkles and giant double chin.

‘When he drinks water, he has all the water between his wrinkles and Chloe has to go and lick the water that falls from between the wrinkles.

‘I try to put moisturiser between his wrinkles every two days, to avoid irritation.’

Originally from the Far East, Shar Pei’s used to have less skin wrinkles but over time breeders have sought for more and more.

Today many Shar Pei owners are aware they must watch out for infections and keep their dogs moisturised in the folds in their skin.

Miss Arguimbau said sharing photos of Harvey’s amazing looks also enabled her to share tips and ideas with other owners about his care.

She said: ‘The truth is that I did not expect this great affection from the people online, I have discovered a great digital community and family, with whom I talk a lot and interact almost every day.

‘Thanks to some of them I have been able to exchange a lot of advice, learn new things and above all be able to share Harvey’s day to day life with people.

‘Harvey attracts a lot of attention in the real world too. Living on such a small island, where all the people know each other, makes Harvey very well-known here.’

Harvey was born with two siblings, Dona and Louis, who have now gone to new homes.

But Miss Arguimbau said Harvey’s first days of life were not without a few wrinkles in the road because he had trouble with his sight.

She said often with Shar Pei puppies they need medical staples on the skin around their eyes to help them open.

She added: ‘Dona and Louis were fine with staples, but not Harvey. He had many more wrinkles compared to his brothers and this meant, despite putting the staples in, he did not finish opening his eyes.

‘This caused his eyes to become infected and for two months he had no sight, and the vet started putting stitches around his eyes to help him open them wider.

‘Every week we went to the vet and they readjusted the stitches and also gave Harvey antibiotics and cream to heal his eyes.

‘At first they did not know if the infection had completely damaged his eyesight and they did not know if he would see again.

‘It was a blessing the day that Harvey followed my finger with his eyes, since for months he would bump into doors, chairs, tables, beds and he couldn’t play because he was afraid to move.

‘Finally, after five months in total, Harvey regained his sight, although in one eye he does not see quite well.

She said: ‘One of the things that he does the most during the day is to look where there is sun, and he lies there as long as he can, although I don’t let him stay long because his face turns red in the sun.

‘He also likes to play with Chloe very much, although he sometimes gets jealous when she listens to us.

He likes to be the centre of attention.

‘Every two days I take him to the beach, since we live near the sea, and he loves it.

‘He really likes sand, although not so much water.

‘He is not a big fan of water, although I hope that this summer he learns to swim.’
