Spitter the chimpanzee dies at Sydney's Taronga Zoo


One of the world’s oldest chimpanzees tragically dies at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo – after delighting visitors for more than 61 years


One of the world’s oldest chimpanzees has died a Taronga Zoo, after delighting generations of Sydney families for 61 years.

A Taronga Zoo spokesperson said Spitter the chimpanzee was euthanised after suffering an acute medical issue. She was 61-years-old.

Spitter was one of the first chimpanzee infants to be born at the zoo and reared by her mother. 

‘Spitter was not only the matriarch of our Chimpanzee community, but in many respects, she was also the matriarch of Taronga,’ the  spokesperson said.

‘Spitter lived a full life and witnessed an array of changes in her 61 years on this earth, reaching an age only a few Chimpanzees have reached anywhere in the world.’
