A man who choked his girlfriend to death pretended to be his victim in messages to her sisters in a cruel attempt to make it seem like she was still alive.

Programmer Adam Margolis, 41, met Mai Yia Vang, 26, on the online chatroom Omegle one month before he murdered her on February 24, 2018.

Ms Vang had been living with her parents in Queensland when the pair first met, before moving her life to Victoria to live with Margolis in Bendigo.

After just one week of living together, Margolis strangled the 26-year-old to death – and then pretended that she was still alive.

Margolis, who posed as Ms Vang, told the victim’s sisters she would be online later because she was feeling unwell and needed to see a doctor.

‘Am really sick now. Flu I think. I’m being looked after,’ the message read.

‘If I’m not online tonight you’ll know why. Will update tomorrow night at the latest.’

On March 4, a Victorian Supreme Court jury rejected Margolis’ defence that he was not responsible for Ms Vang’s death and found him guilty of murder.

He will be sentenced by Justice John Dixon later this year.

On Wednesday, the justice told a court hearing that he had received a letter from Margolis which said he wasn’t to blame for killing Ms Vang, news.com.au reported.

Justice Dixon told Margolis, who appeared on video link from prison, that the letter ‘was primarily concerned with your unhappiness about your legal team and making various arguments as to why you were, in fact, not guilty’.

‘But that train has left the station… The jury has found you guilty of murder.’

Police found Ms Vang’s body lying on a mattress after Margolis sent a 12-page email to three acquaintances, admitting he had killed a woman and planned to take his own life, and asking them to take care of his cats.

One of the men immediately called the police.

Margolis told police after his arrest that Ms Vang had ‘goaded’ him into attacking her by triggering ‘flashbacks’ involving childhood abuse allegedly inflicted by his stepfather.

The 41-year-old said he had a 15-minute ‘flashback’ that involved recollections of fighting his stepfather before ‘waking up’ on top of Ms Vang’s lifeless body.

Margolis had held Ms Vang in a chokehold for between three to four minutes.

Ms Vang was a former chemical engineering student when she met Margolis online.

‘I want to achieve my goals with you, I want everything and more with you,’ she had wrote to him over Skype, the court heard.

Margolis previously told the court he loved Ms Vang and had wanted to marry her before he killed her.
