Sales of Porsche's electric Taycan SURGE and are on track to surpass the iconic 911 model

Sales of Porsche’s electric Taycan SURGE and are on track to surpass the iconic 911 model as consumers eye luxury eco-friendly cars

  • Sales figures show battery powered Porsche Taycan is on track to become a better-selling model than the company’s iconic 911
  • Sales of the Taycan surged in the first quarter of 2021, as eco-friendly cares become more popular
  • The Taycan has a starting price of $79,990, and is seen as more luxurious version of the in-demand Tesla Model 3
  • Meanwhile, the Porsche Macan remains the German automaker’s top-selling vehicle, with  22,458 sold worldwide in the first quarter of 2021
  • China is the strongest sales market for Porsche, with sales in the country up 56 percent when compared to the same time last year

Porsche’s new electric Taycan sedan is on track to become more popular than the automaker’s iconic 911 sports car, new sales data reveals.

The Porsche Taycan was first released in 2019 and, while the model instantly proved popular, it still trailed significantly behind sales of the 911 – a model which has been on the market since 1964.

Last year, the 911 was still significantly outselling the Taycan – which has a sale price starting at $79,990.

Figures released by Porsche show the German automaker sold close to 35,000 911s in 2020, while they sold less than 24,000 Taycans.

However, sales of the Taycan have surged in the first quarter of 2021, as buyers eye eco-friendly vehicles.

In the three months from January to March, Porsche delivered 9,072 Taycans worldwide.

In the same time period, the company sold 9,133 911s, meaning that the Taycan is quickly closing the gap.

It’s unclear what has caused the sudden spike in Taycan sales – but demand for battery-powered cars is continuing to grow, and the Taycan may be a more luxurious alternative to the Tesla Model 3, which has a far lower starting price of $38,490.

However, both the Taycan and the 911 are far from the most popular models made by Porsche.

In the first quarter of 2021, the Porsche Macan was the highest-selling model made by the company, with 22,458 units shipped.

Meanwhile, sales data shows that the German automaker’s Cayenne SUV was the second most popular of their models.

Overall, Porsche sales are up 36 percent – although the increase is hardly surprising given that sales were dramatically effected early last year by the coronavirus pandemic.

China is Porsche’s best-selling market, with a total of 21,1991 cars sold there in the first three months of 2021 alone.

That represents an increase of 56 percent.

Meanwhile, Porsches are becoming more popular for American consumers, 20,468 vehicles delivered in the first-quarter of 2021.

And while the Taycan may be the hot model, the company is still proud of its 911 as sales remain steady.

‘Established models have supported this excellent result along with the latest additions to our product range, above all the new model variants of the all-electric Taycan,’ Porsche sales chief Detlev von Platen said in a statement.

‘We can look back on a very positive start to the year.’
