QLD Covid lockdown threatens Good Friday clash with Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm

The NRL has put Brisbane players on standby to fly to Melbourne immediately with Queensland’s capital city to go into lockdown from Monday evening.

The Broncos’ Good Friday cash with Melbourne Storm remains the biggest concern for the NRL, with all arrivals into Victoria from Brisbane needing to pass a COVID-19 test.

The team had originally made moves to fly to Melbourne on a chartered flight on Tuesday afternoon, in a bid to be tested and be able to prepare as usual.

Lockdowns for Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, Moreton and Brisbane council areas come as four new Covid cases were confirmed overnight (pictured: Covid testing in Bowen Hills)

But they have since been told to be ready to fly at any time to avoid any further issues after four more cases of community transmission were confirmed in Brisbane on Monday.

Whether the Broncos will be able to return home immediately after the Storm game also remains in question, with the club due to host South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium on April 8.

Brisbane players and staff were all tested over the weekend with results all negative, and have been in home isolation since.

Meanwhile, the NRL is trying to navigate Saturday’s clash between Cronulla and North Queensland on the Sunshine Coast.

That region is not one to be placed in lockdown, with the most likely scenario being that chartered flights are used to avoid having to transit through Brisbane.

Gold Coast is to host Canberra on Saturday, but the holiday strip is also not included in the lockdown.
