A group of mourning students have performed a heart-wrenching haka in honour of a much-loved physics teacher who died after a freak accident at his home.

Over 600 students and staff from Kelston Boys High School in Auckland gathered to farewell the teacher on March 31. 

Chris Daly, who died on March 8 after a fall at his home, was known for his ability to see ‘the whole child, not just their academic results.’

He was a highly respected teacher at the school who taught science and physics for over five years and was the manager of the school’s table tennis team.

Mr Daly was ‘the glue that kept the school together’ and a ‘father figure’ to many, students told the NZ Herald.    

A spokesperson for Kelston Boys High School said the performing of the haka was a great way to farewell Mr Daly.

‘It’s a big sign of respect, Mr Daly was a very highly regarded teacher at the school,’ they said. 

The powerful display of respect led to an outpouring of messages of support from around the world after it was shared by the school on social media.

‘That has got to be one of the most powerful things I have ever seen. What amazing young men showing such incredible respect,’ one wrote.

‘Wonderful tribute. Rest in peace. My condolences to the family, friends and students, from Bristol UK,’ another shared. 

‘One of the greatest teachers to ever walk the face of earth may you rest easy sir you will be forever missed,’ a third wrote. 

As the hearse was driven through the school the haka was performed by a group of senior students before they sang the Māori hymn He hōnore.
