On their website, Nike lists the steps for successfully returning the shoes. Footwear is inspected and graded, with inspectors looking to give shoes one of three grades.

Shoes given a ‘1’ will be designated as like new or near-perfect condition, ‘with no sign of wear of flaws.’ Those given a ‘2’ are found to be gently worn, or in ‘great condition with visible light wear or cosmetic flaws.’

Cosmetically flawed shoes will be graded with a ‘3’ because of issues like a stain, mark, discoloration or fading but are ‘otherwise like new.’

‘Up to fifteen U.S.-based stores will carry Nike Refurbished footwear by the end of April 2021, with plans to integrate more of this product at additional U.S.-based stores in the coming year,’ Nike said in a statement.

Two of those will be in Florida while another three will be in California.

Nike is continuing to explore future expansion of the program to markets outside the United States.
