Mr Loughton said: “We see, not defending democracy lightly but the time of Britain or America thinking we can be the world’s policeman ourselves, without recognition of international law, the risks being as bad as the people we’re trying to stop.

“I think lots of us are tired of watching, usually men staying in jobs longer than they should, playing macho monopoly with our planet.

“And they have moved over into a sovereign nation-state, which is isn’t acceptable to lots of people.

“And we need to recognise who blinks first… People have started to blink, it’s real.

Mr Loughton added: “I worry about the people in Russia, in Ukraine.

“As Pat said, to the point about sanctions… Come on, Russia have seen this coming they knew they were going to be there.

“They’ve got their economics in order, they’re ready to take that hit of some short-term sanctions for the long-term gain of geographical expansion.

“Look at Crimea, look at where Putin sees this going, I think it’s really not acceptable.

Mr Loughton added: “And what worries me, is these sanctions, what was it called a barred of British sanctions? Of three piles of Putin in five small banks, is shocking.

Mr Hunt added: “The only sanctions that are really going to work in the long run are the ones that stop him making it harder for the Russian state to fund the Russian military.”

The present Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss has warned that if an attack takes place from Russia on Ukrainian soil, then sanctions would be imposed.

Now that Russia has pushed forward with their attack, Ms Truss is expected to announce the exact specifications of such sanctions.

Ms Truss took to Twitter to condemn the attack, Ms Truss said: “I strongly condemn the appalling, unprovoked attack President Putin has launched on the people of Ukraine.

“We stand with Ukraine and we will work with our international partners to respond to this terrible act of aggression.”
