The desperate search for a missing elderly woman has taken a dark turn with her car found partially submerged in flood waters.

Adele Morrison’s Toyota Corolla was recovered by emergency services from the flooded Barrington River on the New South Wales mid-north coast on Thursday morning – but they found no sign of the 78-year-old.

Ms Morrison was reported missing a day earlier when her family failed to reach her after she travelled to Gloucester from her home at Port Macquarie.

‘Officers with the assistance of SES extracted the car from the water. No person was located inside the vehicle,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

‘Police are continuing to make inquiries to locate the woman and are urging anyone with information about her whereabouts to come forward.’

A coordinated search of the Barrington River will be carried out on Monday, after rescue efforts were hampered by flood waters and road closures.

At the time Ms Morrison was reported missing police and her family said they had serious concerns about her welfare because of her age and severe flooding in the area.

Ms Morrison was believed to have visited a Gloucester shopping centre about 10.45am on March 16. Her whereabouts after this are unknown, with her family revealing it was unusual for her to not be in regular contact with them.

Ms Morrison is described as being Caucasian, around five feet tall, of medium build with grey hair and hazel or green, gold, and brown coloured eyes.
