Harrowing moment frantic mother chases after car as ‘thief flees with baby boy in the back’

  • Infant was inside white Toyota which was stolen in Keysborough on Tuesday
  • Police say the infant and car were found at about 5.40pm after tip from public
  • Mother had briefly exited the car and left the engine running before it was stolen
  • Harrowing CCTV has revealed moment the desperate mother ran after her baby


A mother and son have been miraculously reunited after an opportunistic thief took off with the woman’s car while her 11-month-old baby was still inside.  

The infant was returned to his mother and father after a member of the public spotted the allegedly stolen white 2013 Toyota RAV 4 on a suburban street. 

Harrowing CCTV of the moment an unknown man took off in the 4WD shows the baby’s frantic mother racing after the vehicle as it speeds away.

Police say the child’s mother had briefly exited the car while leaving the engine running before the man jumped into the driver’s seat and took off with the baby. 

A extensive police search was launched however it was a member of the public who located the car and called Victoria Police.

The vehicle was allegedly stolen in Putt Grove in Melbourne’s Keysborough at about 2:10pm on Tuesday, with the car located a few hours later in Cranbourne at 5:40pm. 

The man driving the vehicle was arrested.

‘I can safely say that we have located the child safe and well and he’s in the process of being returned to mum and dad now,’ Inspector Fiona Halford told reporters.

‘I just cannot thank the public enough. It was a member of the general public who had identified police of the location and subsequently police attended that location and found the child safe and well.’

Police earlier released CCTV images of a man they wished to speak to and a car similar to the one stolen.

Investigations are ongoing and a 46-year-old Frankston man is assisting police with their inquiries.
