Hakeem Jeffries tells GOP to 'sit this one out' on Maxine Waters

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the No. 5 Democrat in the House, told GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy that ‘he should sit this one out’ as McCarthy and Republicans gear up to censure Rep. Maxine Waters.

‘Kevin McCarthy should focus on his own conference, because the Republicans in the House are a mess right now,’ Jeffries said at a press conference following a Tuesday morning House Democratic Caucus meeting. ‘Lauren Boebert is a mess. Matt Gaetz is a mess. Marjorie Taylor Greene is a mess. Clean up your mess, Kevin. Sit this one out.’

Republicans have piled on Waters, who said Saturday that Black Lives Matter protesters should ‘get more confrontational’ if officer Derek Chauvin is found not guilty.’

McCarthy plans to offer a censure resolution on the House floor Tuesday afternoon.

Republicans say that Waters was trying to incite violence.

‘It’s harder to imagine anything more inappropriate than a member of Congress flying in from California to inform local leaders – not so subtly – that this defendant had better be found guilty or else there will be big trouble in the streets,’ said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in a floor speech Monday.

‘It is beyond the pale for a sitting member of the United States Congress to look at what happened last summer and imply there should be some kind of a sequel if a legal case does not unfold as she thinks it should,’ McConnell added.

In tweets, Greene called Waters a ‘danger to our society.’

‘As a sitting United States Congresswoman @MaxineWaters threatened a jury demanding a guilty verdict and threatened violence if Chauvin is found not guilty. This is also an abuse of power. #ExpelMaxineWaters,’ Greene said.

Boebert also chimed in.

‘Why is Maxine Waters traveling to a different state trying to incite a riot? What good can come from this?’ the Colorado Republican asked.

Waters defended herself telling the Grio Monday, ‘I a non-violent.’

She floated that Republicans were complaining about her comments as a racist dog-whistle.

‘Republicans will jump on any word, any line and try to make it fit their message and their cause for denouncing us and denying us, basically calling us violent,’ Waters said.

‘Any time they see an opportunity to seize on a word, so they do it and they send a message to the white supremacists, the KKK, the Oath Keepers, the [Proud] Boys and all of that,’ she added.

Democrats pointed out that a number of the Republicans criticizing Waters stuck by former President Donald Trump in the weeks following the January 6 MAGA mob.

Trump was impeached in the House for inciting an insurrection.

‘When you think that Kevin McCarthy has the nerve to say something about anyone, when he supported the violent insurrection after the mob attacked the Capitol, threatened to assassinate Nancy Pelosi, kill other members of Congress, hang Mike Pence,’ Jeffries said Tuesday.

‘He then came back to the Capitol, voted to support the “big lie,” which ignited the insurrection and continues to play footsie with Donald Trump,’ Jeffries continued.

He then named the trio of Gaetz, Greene and Boebert.

Gaetz, a Florida Republican, is currently under federal investigation for possible sex trafficking of a minor.

Greene and Boebert were both previously followers of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Greene was removed from committee assignments by the House Democratic majority after social media posts were discovered that suggested she approved of the assassination of Pelosi, among other transgressions.
