A popular beach in far north Queensland has been closed due to a crocodile coming ‘within metres of swimmers’.

Beachgoers at Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas were directed to get out of the water on Tuesday morning, with the crocodile last seen prowling along the protection nets.

This sighting comes after another three-metre crocodile was filmed just off the same beach in January last year.

Witnesses said they saw the crocodile ‘brush up’ against the nets which prompted the lifesavers to get everyone out of the water.

Once swimmers were out of the water the lifesavers then flew a drone above the beach in an attempt to find the saltwater crocodile, but were unsuccessful.

The sighting of last year’s crocodile was confirmed when lifesavers used a similar drone to identify the creature.

Today’s sighting was the fourth sighting in the past month along Four Mile Beach, according to the Department of Environment and Science.

It is also the 13th crocodile sighting in the last 30 days in the Douglas Shire according to the DES.

Four Mile Beach remained closed for several hours before it reopened to the public in the afternoon.
