A former soccer star who is being held in custody allegedly bashed his cellmate because he didn’t turn off the light in their cell fast enough.

Kerem Bulut, 29, allegedly left his cellmate with a broken eye socket while staying at Silverwater Prison, in western Sydney, on March 24.

Bulut is a former Socceroos player who played overseas and was banned from the game by Turkish football authorities for four years after he took cocaine in 2018, and then placed in remand after allegedly assaulting a man at a house party on March 5.

Bulut was lying on the bottom bunk and his 49-year-old cellmate was lying on the top bunk before he asked him to turn off the light in their cell, Daily Telegraph reported.

Police allege Bulut then attacked the man after he was told: ‘Yep, in a minute.’

Prison guards allegedly found the injured cellmate two hours later before he was taken to Concord Hospital to be treated.

Bulut was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He will appear in Burwood Local Court on Thursday, April 8.

Bulut is currently being held in remand after allegedly assaulting another man at his Rockdale home, in Sydney’s south, on March 5.

Police took out an AVO against Bulut on behalf of the man before charging him with breaching bail and other offences.

Bulut has been scolded by police on several occasions, most significantly in 2010 and 2011 when he was dragged into a criminal case involving a gang known as MBM, the ‘Muslim Brotherhood Militants’, which he has long denied being a member of.

Bulut represented Australia in the youth Socceroos, played overseas in the Czech Republic and Turkey, and signed with the Wanderers in 2015 – becoming an instant club legend when he scored two goals in his debut match.

He did not renew his contract and moved back to Turkey to play but his career was dealt a crippling when he was hit with a four year ban by the Turkish Football Federation for cocaine use.

Bulut’s four-year ban is the longest being served by an Australian athlete for a first-time recreational drug offence.
