Five-year-old footy fan smacked in head by footy at Port Adelaide match against St Kilda

A young unsuspecting footy fan has copped a rogue ball to the head after his brother lifted him up in the stands to catch a winning goal.

Sonny Ah-Matt was watching the Port Adelaide match against St Kilda on Sunday at the Adelaide Oval when midfielder Connor Rozee booted a crowd-bound goal 40 metres out on the field. 

The five-year-old Port Adelaide fan was hoisted up by this older brother Malachai when the ball shot through his hands and clobbered him in the face.

‘He was like “Connor, Connor!” and then the ball came and it just clocked him right in the head,’ Malachai told 9News. 

The force of the goal threw young Sonny backwards but his family said he only took a couple minutes to recover from the shock blow before getting back up.

‘At the end of the game he was standing up cheering and singing,’ Sonny’s mum Kristy said.

Before the game the brothers made a $100 bet that five-year-old Sonny wouldn’t catch the ball on game night.

But after the young fan’s unexpected brush with the ball his brother Malachai said he’d make an exception.   

‘I’m thinking about giving him $50 because he put in the effort,’ Malachai said. 

The astonishing moment even caught the eye of Port Adelaide midfielder Travis Boak. 

‘He was in a great position to take a mark but he’s probably not actually big enough to grab that footy I think, but hopefully he’s alright,’ told the news outlet.
