A CCTV video played in court today showed Derlarno Samuels, 17, being stabbed in the street in Smethwick, West Midlands before seeking refuge in a Polish supermarket on May 1, 2021.

The video was said to show Cam-Ron Dunn, 18, cycling up the road before ditching his bike as Derlarno walked on the opposite side of Waterloo Road.

Samuels’ family left court when the video was played.

Samuels was stabbed to the upper right chest and the left torso before he ran to seek refuge inside a Polish supermarket.

Samuels was then taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Cam-Ron Dunn, 18, of Smethwick, was charged with the murder two days later on May 3 and he is now on trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Prosecutor Michelle Heeley said Dunn chased Derlarno into the store where he hacked at him again with the blade, causing fatal injuries.

Talking jurors through the footage, Miss Heeley added: ‘Derlarno Samuels was seen walking across the road.

‘The defendant is near and walking with his bike.

‘Footage from Kiran Jewellers then shows that the defendant is on foot and Derlarno is seen walking on the opposite side of the road.

‘He then crosses the road and walks over to where the defendant is.

‘The defendant then reaches into his waistband and attacked Derlarno twice.’

Police Investigator Ben Screech, of West Midlands Police’s Homicide Team, said Derlarno was defenceless as he was attacked.

He said: ‘You cannot see anything in Derlarno’s hands, except one which is consistent with being a mobile phone in his right hand.’

He said one image of a red mark on the clothing of Derlarno appeared to show where he was stabbed.

He added: ‘On Derlarno’s upper right chest there appears to be a red mark, believed to be blood.

‘This appears to be consistent with the striking motion of the defendant.’

In a statement issued by West Midlands Police, Derlarno’s family said: ‘Derlarno was ambitious, inquisitive and full of life.

‘He was a generous young man who is much loved and missed by his family and friends.’
