A former student who struck a psychologist with his speeding McLaren Sports Car in 2020 has appeared in court for arraignment. 

Ka Leung Chan wore a mask as he looked straight ahead at the Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday as he attended the arraignment for vehicular manslaughter in the death of 68-year-old psychologist Larry D. Brooks, Ph. D. 

Chan, who attended the Southern California Institute of Architecture on a student visa, had been driving his sports car south on Sante Fe on May 4, 2020, when he struck the pedestrian.

Brooks’ wife, Anna Marie Piersimoni, was in attendance for the hearing. 

The young student told police he swerved to avoid a car that was pulling out, adding that he was going ‘less than 60’ at the time, the Los Angeles Times reports. At the particular point on the road, the speed limit is 30 miles an hour. 

After he swerved, Chan struck several vehicles before he plowed into Brooks. The psychologist was walking home at the time of the incident.

Brooks’ shoes were knocked off and his left leg was severed. The psychologist was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Chan, who was only 23 at the time of the incident, was released the following day on a $250,000 bail. 

In addition to the vehicular manslaughter charge, Chan also faces a wrongful-death lawsuit.
