An elderly couple in their 70s have died after their house caught fire in West Sussex.

Emergency services attended the scene of the blaze at a house on Theobalds Road in Burgess Hill just after midnight on Sunday.

A man and woman in their early 70s were found dead at the scene, Sussex Police said.

Police added that the couple’s next of kin have been informed and an investigation was underway to establish the cause of the fatal fire.

Pictures from the scene show severe smoke damage by a ground floor window of the house, where a police tent has been set up.   

Sussex Police said in a statement: ‘Emergency services were called to reports of a house fire in Theobalds Road in Burgess Hill shortly after midnight on Sunday February 20th.

‘Police attended to support the fire service, and two people – a man and a woman in their 70s – were sadly found dead at the scene.

‘Their next of kin have been informed.

‘The Coroner’s Office has been notified and work is underway to establish the full circumstances of the situation.

‘No further information is available at this time.’
