- Australian students to sit NAPLAN tests in May after they were scrapped in 2020
- Online tutors Cluey Learning have challenged parents to see how they stack up
- They provide ten sample questions students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will answer
- The scheme has been criticised as for promoting unnecessary stress in schools
Australian parents are being challenged as to how well they remember their school English and maths lessons and whether they would pass a standard test for students aged 8 to 14.
Online school tutors Cluey Learning have created a quick ten-question NAPLAN quiz parents can take to see how they perform compared to their kids on the national assessment scale.
The annual language and numeracy tests were cancelled in 2020 because of the lockdown disrupted school year but will resume in May for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

‘Students demonstrate their understanding of grammar rules or processes for solving an equation and their ability to navigate multiple choice questions, interpret instructions, and understand how to write for a specific purpose,’ Cluey chief learning officer Selina Samuels said.

The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy was introduced in 2008 to provide a benchmark for how schools and individual students are faring on basic skills
The yearly NAPLAN tests have been criticised for various reasons including a delay between sitting the test and receiving results along with creating an environment of stress and competition rather than learning
NSW education minister Rob Stokes called for the expensive testing program to be scrapped saying NAPLAN had become a tool to rank schools
There has also been criticism over the cost of the program which requires a mammoth effort to test students Australia-wide
A report from the Senate Education, Employment and Workplace Relations References Committee also found teachers did not know how to adequately use NAPLAN data to tailor their classroom lessons
‘In spite of the controversy surrounding NAPLAN … our power to give immediate feedback could service the true goal to ensure children meet the core skills they need in school and in life,’ a Cluey spokesperson said.
For those adults who didn’t do so well in the test don’t be too concerned, another criticism of the program is that the results can be misleading and ignored areas other than maths and English
International education expert Professor Margaret Wu has studied standardised testing and found the small number of questions asked in each NAPLAN section may not provide an accurate picture of a student’s overall grasp of a subject
