Double tragedy as an Aussie town is rocked by the sudden deaths of TWO popular young teachers just days apart – one from brain cancer

  • A popular high school teacher in Ballarat died after a battle with brain cancer 
  • It is the second time news has broken that a Ballarat teacher has died this week 
  • The community are still mourning the earlier death of PE teacher James Petrie


A Victorian town has been shaken by the deaths of two popular teachers just days apart.

Ballarat’s Loreto College announced the death of well-liked English teacher Stephanie Carswell from brain cancer on Wednesday.

Ms Carswell’s death came just days after popular PE teacher and local footy player James Petrie passed away at 33 over the weekend.

Loreto College described Ms Carswell as ‘caring, gentle and intelligent’ in a social media announcement on Wednesday.

‘Her dedication to her work came through in her patience, kind words and willingness to accept people for themselves,’ the school wrote.

Tributes rushed in on the post, with one commenter writing: ‘The whole Loreto community will no doubt feel this sad loss tremendously.’   

‘A beautiful soul who gave her all and more to her students and everyone around her. So blessed to have her teach our daughter. Deepest sympathy to her lovely family,’ another wrote. 

Earlier in the week the community learned a beloved Physical Education teacher at Ballarat High – 500metres down the road from Loreto College – had unexpectedly died.  

Waubra football club coach Matt James told the Herald Sun Mr Petrie was ‘just a really, really well liked, popular guy that was a real leader at our footy club.’

One of Mr Petrie’s students said: ‘This week, and the weeks to come, will be hard for all of us that were privileged enough to work alongside Peach (Mr Petrie). He will be sadly missed.’

‘Such a friendly, helpful and lovely man, who will be very much missed. sincere condolences to James’ family’ one parent said.
