An armed man has been arrested after multiple suspected explosives were found near the emergency room at a hospital on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington.
Dozens of officers with the FBI, ATF and several local police departments responded to an alleged bomb threat at the university’s Chandler Hospital just after 10.30am on Thursday.
University Police Chief Joe Monroe confirmed that 44-year-old Bryan Carroll was taken into custody and will face unspecified state and federal charges in connection with the incident.
Monroe said his agency had received a tip from police in the neighboring town of Versailles that Carroll was going to the hospital to visit a relative and was considered potentially armed and dangerous.
Police intercepted Carroll as he walked out of the hospital. The suspect was carrying multiple firearms and wearing body armor.
Investigators discovered ‘a couple’ suspected explosive devices in Carroll’s car, which was parked outside the emergency room, Monroe said.

The police chief refused to elaborate on the tip that led to Carroll’s arrest and it remains unclear if he was planning to detonate the explosives.
No one was injured in the incident that led authorities to block traffic in the area for more than four hours.
Officers in bomb suits were pictured on the scene and a bomb disposal robot appeared to be checking various cars in the parking lot.
Monroe refused to say how long Carroll had been on the radar of the Versailles Police Department, or why.
He refuted social media rumors suggesting that the suspect had threatened to take people hostage inside the hospital.
The university issued a statement confirming that the threat situation had ended at 3pm.
Police were seen outside a home in Versailles believed to belong to Carroll on Thursday afternoon.
