One of Australia’s greatest ever basketballers has been slammed over a series of comments about the Russia-Ukraine war.
In a Twitter message posted on Friday, he wrote: ‘Australian Politicians: If you are putting a statement out re Russia/Ukraine. Please STFU if you: 1. Were silent about Canada. 2. Have mandates that discriminate against people in your very own state. This basically means EVERY ONE of you should be very quiet.’
STFU is a well-known acronym for ‘shut the f*** up’.

‘Delete your account,’ responded the Australian author John Birmingham.
‘As an ethnic Hungarian, my entire family understand that Soviet oppression and wearing a mask/getting jabbed during a pandemic are two very different things. Incomparable,’ wrote a man named Kane.
‘Hey Andrew, the threat of what could very well become all out nuclear warfare is a teeeny tiny bit worse than the government asking you to get a little needle to protect you from dying of a preventable virus,’ said Lavenda Baj.
Mark Karantzoulis, a Chicago Bulls podcast host, didn’t hold back.
‘Andrew Bogut trying his hand as a political commentator and geopolitical expert is the worst thing to happen to Australian basketball since Andrew Bogut last said some dumb sh**.’
Nor did hundreds of others. One wrote: ‘Guys please be careful on the basketball court, you may get hit in the head by the ball too many times and end up like Andrew Bogut.’
After being challenged over his tweet, Bogut clarified, stating ‘Hypocritical Pollies was [my] point. Not debating a full blood shedding war is as bad as mandates.’
He also defiantly stated ‘this post has the usual suspects abusing me. The same ones who tweet about tolerance and equality. Comedy!’
Bogut also retweeted a satirical article that joked Putin planned to withdraw troops because Dan Andrews had placed yellow and blue lighting on the streets of Melbourne in solidarity with Ukraine.
‘Massive!! Hey all, we did it!’ Bogut joked.

Bogut, now 37, had a decorated career as a player but has been mocked for loose public statements several times, recently including his anti-vax sentiments.
He went on a wild rant in August 2021 urging high profile athletes to speak out against Covid rules.
He claimed he had been offered money to promote staying home to keep the community safe during Covid.
‘I refuse to do that s**t’.
His mention of ‘Canada’ is most likely an oblique reference to the Canadian government’s Covid restrictions.
That sparked huge and highly-publicised ‘freedom convoy’ protests.

However some Australians jumped to the defence of Bogut.
Broadcaster Michelle Stephenson said: ‘The left have become the least tolerant. I don’t always agree with you and that’s okay.’
Another Twitter user wrote: ‘To be fair I don’t think he is ‘comparing wearing a mask to dropping Bombs,’ wrote one. ‘He is pointing out that Pollies were silent on Vax Mandates & Trudeau freezing bank accts etc of peaceful protesters (or anyone who donated to them). All should be “condemned”, that’s all he is saying.’
