Why has Defence minister Johnny Mercer resigned? Statement in full

Johnny Mercer has been at the centre of much speculation this week after news emerged he was on the brink of quitting his job. Earlier on Tuesday, Downing Street said it was not aware Mr Mercer was intending to quit the Government. Asked if the minister had spoken to Mr Johnson before resigning, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said: “I am not aware they have had any conversations.”

The spokesperson added: “Johnny Mercer is a valued minister in the Government and we have had a good track record on delivering for veterans’ issues.

“I am not aware of anything in the diary of the Prime Minister to speak to him.”

Mr Mercer rose to the rank of captain in the Royal Artillery and served three tours in Afghanistan, and declares he went into politics nearly 10 years ago with the aim of improving the treatment of veterans.

He became MP for Plymouth Moor View in 2015, taking the seat from the Labour Party.
