Electric car 'revolution' would boost jobs and protect environment, Labour claims

Ed Miliband wants to make owning greener vehicles more affordable and easier to charge up. In a speech today, the shadow business secretary is also calling for public cash to part-fund three battery production plants, known as gigafactories.

The Daily Express is leading the charge for a green revolution in the way we treat our planet with our environmental crusade.

Mr Miliband will say a “green transformation” could make Britain a fairer country and create good, secure jobs.

He will set out plans to “back the car industry and create jobs” by focusing on boosting the country’s electric vehicle production.

Interest-free loans should be offered for new and used electric vehicles to those on low to middle incomes to remove the upfront cost barrier, the Labour frontbencher will say.

“By extending the option to buy an electric car to those on lower incomes and accelerating the roll-out of charging points in regions that have been left out, we would ensure that everyone could benefit – rather than bake in unfairness,” Mr Miliband said ahead of the event.

“And we would invest in securing the industry’s future. While it’s right that government has said the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will end, it’s wrong it is imposing a massive transition on our manufacturers from Whitehall then washing its hands of responsibility.”

A Government spokesman said: “We’re investing up to £2.8 billion in driving the switch to electric vehicles, working with industry to support the installation of thousands of chargepoints, and boosting the development of new technologies through the Automotive Transformation Fund.”
