More than three decades following the release of the original Top Gun movie, the Tom Cruise blockbuster has received a sequel in Top Gun: Maverick.
In the original movie, Top Gun (1986), a youthful Cruise appears as the pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, as he and his co-pilot Goose (played by Anthony Edwards) take part in the Navy’s top school for top fighter pilots.
Top Gun is still a fan-favourite to this day, owing to numerous factors including a star-making turn from Tom Cruise, memorable supporting characters such as Anthony Edwards’ Goose and Val Kilmer’s Iceman, fantastic ’80s tunes such as “Danger Zone” and “Take My Breath Away” as well as spectacular aerial sequences. Speculation about a sequel has been swirling around for years and now it’s here.
What can you expect from Top Gun: Maverick? Here is rundown of the sequel.
A Run Down Of The Second Top Gun
If you are a fan of the first movie – or if you do want to rewatch it or watch it for the very first time — your enjoyment of the sequel will of course be improved. Top Gun: Maverick is overflowing in nostalgia, to the point of recreating signature moments from the first movie such as the opening montage of jets taking off (against the backdrop of Kenny Loggins’ iconic “Danger Zone”) and the shirtless beach sports scene (though here volleyball is substituted with football, and the homoeroticism is cranked way down).
However if you’ve never flown with Maverick before, rest assured that you’re still in good hands. Top Gun: Maverick is a well-oiled machine which requires no prior flight time from viewers who are just joining the action now in 2022.
For example, Maverick’s main motivating factor—the guilt which still haunts him about the death of Goose, who was his best friend and Radar Intercept Officer, in the original film —is quite clearly explained and signalled.
Photos of Goose are all over the place, the new movie flashes back to the sequence in the original when Goose is killed, and the memory of Goose is further put front and centre by the entrance of his son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller) at the flight school, where he is one of the novices who may be chosen to fly the film’s very risky central mission.
Which Actors Are In The Top Gun: Maverick Cast?
Maverick is one of Cruise’s most iconic roles, so you just can’t have a Top Gun movie without the star re-enacting the character. It would be like having an online casino welcome bonus without iconic games like slots or Roulette!
Cruise isn’t the only cast member who returns from the original film. Maverick’s frenemy is back, as Val Kilmer plays Iceman. In addition, there are a lot of new faces in Top Gun: Maverick. Key to the plot of this movies is Miles Teller, who will be playing Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, who is the son of Maverick’s old co-pilot Goose.
Other new members of the cast include Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell Warlock, Bashir Salahuddin and Ed Harris.
