Labour MP Dawn Butler takes swipe at Queen Jubilee plans for schools as 'waste of money'

Dawn Butler, MP for Brent Central, has shared a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging him to think about the £12m to be spent of giving primary schools a “commemorative book” celebrating the Queen’s historic jubilee.

She tweeted: “I’ve written to the Prime Minister outlining my concerns regarding the plan to mark the Queen’s 70-year reign by sending a commemorative book to all primary school children in the UK.

“£12 million could be better spent preventing against further spread of Covid-19.”

In her letter, she said: “Like most people in the UK, I have a huge amount of respect for the Queen’s long record of public service, but I do not feel this is an appropriate commemoration as the proposals seem to associate the Queen with political events during her reign.”
