Political Correspondent Iain Watson said Boris Johnson achieved the “remarkable political feat” for uniting a Labour and Conservative leader against the proposed vaccine passports. Former party leaders Jeremy Corbyn and Iain Duncan Smith have voiced their opposition to the documents to allow sectors of the country to reopen. The Prime Minister also faces rebellion from backbench MPs who say the certificates are extremely dangerous to individual liberties.
The reduced restrictions will allow outdoor hospitality and non-essential shops to open from April 12 as the first sign of life returning back to normal.
Hairdressers, gyms and public buildings will also reopen with pubs and restaurants no longer following the “substantial meal” requirement or curfew.
The Prime Minister also stressed that social contact rules remain the same meaning gatherings can only consist of six people or two households together.
As part of the roadmap out of lockdown, restriction easing is spread out over five weeks to monitor the impact of the new rules.
The Government also announced it would be trialling a “Covid-status certification” – or vaccine passports – for some major events being held later this month.
