'You said win or die – you’re NOT winning!’ Marr mocks Rayner for Labour poll disaster

The BBC’s Andrew Marr accused the Labour Party of jumping on the recent chaos inside No10, following Dominic Cumming’s outburst, because they are desperate. Speaking to Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner, Mr Marr said: “Isn’t the truth that you are jumping on this because nothing else you are saying as the Labour Party is cutting through in the country at the moment?” He pointed out that Labour were at least 14 points behind the polls, as the UK heads to the polls in less than two weeks.

Mr Marr said: “We have a huge pandemic and 127,000 dead. We have lots of economic problems and challenges around the world, and yet the Labour Party is 14 points behind in polls.

“Not a little bit behind but a long way behind. You are jumping on this because there is nothing else.”

Ms Rayner said Labour had defended free school meals, care workers and the NHS staff, and insisted “those messages are starting to cut through now”.

But, the BBC host fired back: “After the last election, you said we had a choice – win or die.”

“It doesn’t look like you are winning at the moment. You have been lagging in the polls for a long time.

“When are we going to see a turnaround in Labour’s fortunes?”

Ms Rayner blamed the plight of Labour on the party’s defeat in the 2019 general election.

She added: “Labour has changed. We are under new leadereship and we are listening to the electorate.”
