Shoppers have found themselves on an unwanted Easter egg hunt this weekend with many being met by empty shelves at supermarkets.
Britons who left it to the last minute to pick up their seasonal chocolate treats have vented their disappointment on social media, with many sharing photos and memes.
One Waitrose customer from Norwich shared a snap of bare shelves at her local branch, joking she should have bought hers at New Year, while a Tesco shopper dubbed Easter eggs the ‘new loo roll’ after people seemingly panic bought earlier in the week. FEMAIL has reached out Waitrose and Tesco for comment.
Meanwhile a number of Asda customers moaned they were unable to order an egg online and were told they could only pick one up in store, while a Mumsnet user started a thread after failing to pick up an egg from Sainsbury’s or Marks and Spencer.

Earlier this week M&S and Asda warned shoppers they were running low in stock of Easter eggs online and urged people to pick one up in store – where they’d also been flying off the shelves.
A spokesperson for Asda said at the time: ‘Our chocolate eggs were so popular with the Easter Bunny this year that we’re running low,’ adding: ‘We still have eggs available in store but we recommend that shoppers don’t leave it to the last minute as we have seen a rise in demand this year.’
And an M&S representative said: ‘We predict this Easter to be our biggest ever and our eggs are selling fast so we recommend picking up your Easter favourites whilst you can.’

And one remarked: ‘Brought my nephews to a super store Tesco earlier to pick their Easter eggs, the shelves were empty. They were full on Monday when I was there. Imagine panic buying bleeding Easter eggs? It’s like this time last year but with bog roll.’

On the Mumsnet thread, which attracted 381 posts, one railed: ‘Just been to Sainsbury’s and Tesco too, none left! Happened with advent calendars at end of November too, they must be clearing stock earlier.’
‘Lidl only had dark chocolate this pm, luckily I had already bought mine,’ commented another.
And one wrote: ‘Nothing in the Easter aisle at Asda by us either. I bought ours last week. But was shocked to see the aisle looking like the locusts have ravaged it.’
Though not everyone was sympathetic, with one Mumsnet user remarking yesterday: ‘They have been selling Easter Eggs for months/weeks, it’s Good Friday tomorrow with reduced trading hours, and the supermarkets are shut on Sunday so it’s a bit like expecting to get a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve.’
Others recommended trying smaller shops, with one writing: ‘Big supermarkets around me have practically sold out but I went to two smaller local style stores today, a Co-op and a Tesco Express and they had loads of varieties and loads of stock.’
