A father repeatedly bashed and strangled his ex-girlfriend while she was breastfeeding their newborn son – then dragged her and the baby under a shower.

Albany Magistrates Court heard that Dion James Cummings, 41, viciously assaulted his ex-partner while she nursed the infant at her home at Yakamia, in Western Australia, on August 10, 2020, in front of her four children.

Her 10-year-old son told police he woke up to see Cummings punching her, ‘a lot – about 10, 20, 30 times.’

As the woman, 35, gave video evidence to the court from a victim support room, Cummings angrily erupted and directed a stream of abuse at her, including s*** and c***.

He shouted out ‘I just want this over with’ and demanded his plea be changed to guilty.

The 10-year-old boy also appeared by video link and was cross-examined by his defence lawyer.

The Western Australian Police prosecutor Sargeant Alan Dean told the court Cummings and the woman were drinking together but he became abusive and then violent after midnight while she was breastfeeding their six-week-old son.

‘He walked over to where the victim was breastfeeding her baby, grabbed her by the hair and started punching her all over the head and face,’ Sgt Dean said.

Cummings then dragged her ‘by the hair’ while punching her, to the bathroom – while she clung onto the baby.

He then forced them into the shower, turning cold water on them.

Sgt Dean said Cummings then dragged her out of the shower and when he could not separate mother from baby, he began to strange her.

‘The victim managed to escape from the accused and ran with the baby to the toilet, where she locked herself in, smashed the window and screamed for help,’ Sgt Dean said.

Cummings remains in custody and appears in court for sentencing on May 14.
