'Unite for Women' protesters march through centre of Brighton

Protesters marched through the centre of Brighton today on a ‘Unite for Women’ demonstration.

The protest began at 1pm this afternoon at the Peace statue in Hove and moved towards the city centre.

The ‘Unite for Women’ protest aims to raise awareness about sexual assault and harassment, and calls on schools in particular to take these issues seriously.

After lockdown rules were eased on Monday, Covid-secure protests and picketing are now permitted. 

People attending the protest were asked to bring face masks, as well as signs and banners promoting the cause.

Sussex Police have said they are aware of the protest, and that public safety is their top priority.

‘Officers will continue to engage with people and keep explaining the Covid-19 restrictions which remain in place at this time and urge the public to carry on supporting us in our efforts to prevent the further spread of the virus,’ a Sussex Police spokesperson said. 

‘Public safety is, and always will be the police’s top priority, and this hasn’t changed throughout our approach to the pandemic.’ 

A  member of the Brighton Youth Black Lives Matter movement said: ‘The event is for girls across Brighton and Hove schools to stand up for sexual harassment, rape and assault and get schools to take it seriously.’
