Two children aged 3 and 11 are fighting for life after a car with three kids on board smashed into a tree – as the driver, 40, is arrested

Two children are fighting for life after a car veered off the road and slammed into a tree in a seaside town.

Detectives launched a public appeal for information into the horror crash in Wonthaggi south-east of Melbourne on Monday afternoon.

Police believe the driver of a black hatchback veered off Merrin Crescent and struck a tree about 3.50pm.

A 11-year-old boy in the front passenger seat suffered life-threatening injuries and airlifted to the The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne in a coma.

A three-year-old girl in the back seat was also seriously injured and airlifted to the same hospital.

The pair remain in a critical but stable condition, according to a hospital statement.

Another back seat passenger, a 17-year-old girl also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the local hospital.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined.

The driver of the car who also suffered minor injuries was arrested at the scene.

The 41-year-old Morwell man was later released pending further inquiries and is assisting police with their ongoing investigations.
