Three people are shot dead in Austin with gunman remaining on the loose and residents told to shelter at home

  • Police confirmed at 2.30pm ET that shooter was still active in north-west of city
  • But later added that it was a ‘domestic situation’ that didn’t post risk to the public
  • The local EMS said three adults had been killed but no reports of other victims 

Three adults were shot dead in Austin Sunday with the gunman remaining on the loose and residents told to shelter at home. 

Police confirmed at 2.30pm ET that the shooter was still active, but said the incident is believed to be a ‘domestic situation’ that does not pose a risk to the general public. 

The Austin-Travis County EMS said three adults had been killed but it had not received reports of any other victims.

Austin Police Department tweeted at 1.50pm ET: ‘APD is currently on scene of an active shooting incident at Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway. 

‘All residents are advised to shelter in place and avoid the area. PIO en route. – PIO8.’ 

The department added 40 minutes later: ‘At this time the Great Hills Trail scene is still active. 

‘We are still asking residents to shelter in place and report suspicious activity. 

‘While a suspect is still at large it appears this is a domestic situation that is isolated and there is no risk to the general public.’

EMS spokeswoman Capt. Christa Stedman said early Sunday afternoon that the first 911 call came in at 11.44am CDT and that three adults were fatally shot.

Images from the scene showed a large presence of emergency responders.

Steadman said she did not know the exact location where the three people were killed.

She said they responded to an area that included a strip mall, several retail stores with a large apartment complex behind it.
