'The beginning of the end' Sturgeon to be gone by next election as Scotland demands change

Jackson Carlaw told Express.co.uk that Nicola Sturgeon is at “the beginning of the end” of her tenure as SNP leader. The former Scottish Tory leader added that the Scottish public will want a new leader when the nation enters the recovery phase from the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Carlaw said: “I would have thought bluntly, having been as First Minister now for as long as her immediate predecessor that irrespective of the outcome of this election [she will go soon].

“What was it that Churchill said? It is not even the beginning of the end but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

“Well, I think we are past the end of the beginning now with Sturgeon, I think it is the beginning of the end.

“When that comes about I do not know but I would not have thought, despite her echoing Ms Thatcher saying she is going to go on and on, that she would be First Minister for much longer into this Parliament.

“I think the public will feel that she did her job and duty during Covid but we are now into a recovery phase and we need some fresh thinking and leadership for that.”

During the same interview, Mr Carlaw stated that Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP is re-running their 2019 general election campaign ahead of the crucial May Holyrood election.

The former Scottish Tory leader added that the SNP campaign has been a mistake and as a result, he does not expect the party to be able to secure a majority in Holyrood on their own.

He said: “It looks to me as if the tide is now turning. The longer people are looking at these issues the more it is shifting.

“They know perfectly well that the issue of this election is independence and the record of the SNP who runs the Government of Scotland.”

Mr Carlaw continued: “So I think that their campaign has been a mistake and I do not think it is energising the sort of vote that they managed to pull together in 2019.

“So I think they are absolutely going to have to depend on somebody.”

The Scottish Parliamentary elections takes place this Thursday on May 6, 2021.
