Surrey restaurant is branded 'sexist' for dress code asking women to wear tight clothes and heels

A swanky new restaurant has been branded sexist after revealing its dress code  which asks female customers to wear ‘sexy black ankle-strap heels with a form-fitting top’ or ‘bodycon dresses’.

Beluga Bar, in Leatherhead, Surrey, opened earlier this week and serves locals pricey Japanese fare including £45 Caviar and £17 Octopus Maki.

But the restaurant and bar has been branded ‘outdated and misogynistic’ after sharing its ‘smart casual’ dress code which asks women to wear tight clothing, as well as stating that men should wear jackets and not tracksuits or t-shirts.

The said list has now been deleted after a furious backlash, with one angry local writing on social media: ‘WTF have you read how sexist and how out of touch your T&Cs are for 2022!.

‘You’re a restaurant on Leatherhead High street not some private members club in Mayfair (which will even allow a flat shoes and skinny jeans combo!)’

The bar and restaurant,  which claims to be entry ‘strictly by invite only’, also has a no hoodies, trainers, shorts or flip flops rule.

But the policy has caused rage among locals who deem the tight clothes for women rules ‘sexist’.

Taking to Instagram, one wrote: ‘Not sure we will be able to come with the dress code for women ?!! Don’t own any sexy black ankle strap shoes’.

Many of the comments have since been deleted, and the T&Cs have also been taken down from the website.

Earlier today, the posts were flooded with comments calling out the ‘sexist’ policy.

One added: ‘Your dress code and laughable terms and conditions mean that you have lost my custom before you’ve even opened.’

A third commented: ‘You’ve unfortunately alienated a large chunk of your market by your antiquated & misogynistic “rules”.

While a fourth penned: ‘Woman have to dress sexy as mentioned in the T&C’s. Not sure how they are even allowed to post such sexist entry requirements!’

A fifth replied: ‘I can’t believe the t&c… so sexist in this day and age’.

FEMAIL has contacted Beluga Bar for comment.

Many took to Facebook to flood the bar with negative reviews, with one writing: ‘Your dress code is disgusting and sexist! Should be ashamed… a lot of people will be boycotting’.

‘Leatherhead is not a city, it is a town, not a rich town and with that outdated misogynistic dress code you will not get many clientele,’ said one.

‘Sort your dress code and rules out, basically looking like your all perverts wanting the girls in heels and tight fitting jeans and dresses. It’s LEATHERHEAD not the f****** Ritz’

‘Very 1980s pervy strip club dress code. Won’t be visiting anytime soon,’ wrote another.

One added: ‘Never in a million years! Your dress code is appallingly misogynistic. If this is how you treat your customers, I pity your employees. Your antiquated attitude is shocking, disgusting and not welcome. Shame on you all’.

Beluga bar describes itself online as ‘housed in the heart of the city centre in the affluent, leafy suburb of Leatherhead’ despite Leatherhead being a town with a population of less than 12,000.

It adds: ‘Beluga is a modern & elegant place to enjoy an evening of fine dining, exciting cocktails with the best in-house DJs and music to upbeat your senses.

‘Our award-winning chefs have designed an electric menu, which will take the city by storm, chefs masterminds our innovative menus, while our talented mixologists are driving forward Surrey’s cocktail culture with exciting ingredients and creations.

‘Relax in our luxurious art deco styled restaurant and treat yourself to our outstanding sushi menu at Beluga. It’s a taste sensation!’.

The license is held by a local businessman Mr Nowkandi.
