Sturgeon savaged over independent Scotland vaccination claim 'How can you say that?!'

Nicola Sturgeon insisted the same number of people in Scotland would be inoculated against coronavirus had the country been independent during a key election interview clash on Tuesday. STV host Colin Mackay shut down the First Minister’s claim by pointing to the vaccine rollouts in countries that the SNP have held up as models for a future independent Scotland such as Ireland and Danemark.

Mr Mackay asked the SNP leader: “Do you think has many people in Scotland would have been vaccinated if we had been independent?”

“Yes” was the response from Ms Sturgeon.

“How can you say that!?” retorted the Scottish interviewer.

He continued: “If you look at the other independent countries that you mentioned during your manifesto launch the other day, Ireland, Danemark.

“We’ve almost vaccinated three times more than them.”

Ms Sturgeon replied: “This notion that the UK has only been able to procure the vaccine and vaccinate so many people because their outside of the EU is not born out.

“Firstly by the reality, the UK was still in the transition period therefore subject to all of the rules and regulations of the EU when it procured the vaccine.

“European countries are able if they so wish particular during health emergencies to procure in the way the UK did.”

Earlier in the same interview snapped at Mr Mackay when he questioned if her party could do without “extra funding” to deliver on manifesto pledges.

She said: “Devolved tax revenues are estimated to grow by about 20 percent.”

Mr Mackay interjected: “You could do without the extra funding.”

Ms Sturgeon continued: “Let me finish.”
