However, nearly half of us want to buy items we can wear over and over.

Ashley Burghardt, of stylist Stitch Fix UK, which commissioned the OnePoll survey, said: ‘People are seeking ways to make their wardrobes work harder, for longer.’

‘Speed purchasing’ is a common issue, with 31 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds buying trends on a whim, only to realise the purchase doesn’t suit them.

The study also found the average adult reckons a fifth of their clothes don’t fit.

Despite a large portion of the wardrobe going neglected, those surveyed will complain about having nothing to wear on average once every five days.

The study also found 32 per cent admit to getting into quarrels with housemates or their significant other over clothes left unworn. While over a third are looking to have a wardrobe refresh in 2022.

And 37 per cent agreed owning fewer items – ones they really love – would reduce the stress of getting ready.
