A man attacked two cats while he was out walking his dog and caused one serious leg injuries. 

The unidentified man was walking his dog on Belloza Way in Mernda, Melbourne, around 4.50pm last Wednesday when two cats approached him.

The first, a 15-year-old ginger cat, was walking along the street when the man walked past and kicked it.

The ginger cat began to run towards a home and was closely followed by a black-and-white cat.

However, the man then kicked the black-and-white cat in another direction and appeared to encourage his dog to chase it.

Police allege the man then picked up a piece of wood and attacked another cat with it.

The elderly ginger cat was severely injured in the cruel attack and has been left with an ongoing leg injury.

Victoria Police released images of the man and have asked for help identifying him.

The man appeared to be Caucasian in appearance, roughly 185cm tall, of slim build, and with dark hair.

At the time of the attack he was wearing blue shoes, blue mid-length socks, black shorts, a black t-shirt, black watch, black sunglasses, and a grey cap.
