Scottish election debate LIVE: Channel 4 showdown TONIGHT – Galloway and Salmond snubbed

The SNP leader will face rival Anas Sarwar from Scottish Labour, along with Douglas Ross from the Scottish Conservatives, Willie Rennie at the Lib Dems and Green candidate Patrick Harvie. However, Alba Party leader Alex Salmond and All for Unity lead candidate George Galloway will not be taking part in the debate. The Channel 4 programme, hosted by news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy, will start at 7pm and is expected to last around 45 minutes.

With just over a week before voters take to the poll for the election, tensions are expected to be high among the leaders tonight.

Channel 4 News editor Ben de Pear said: “This is a landmark election of potentially enormous significance for Scotland and the UK.

“We’re delighted to have the leaders of the five main parties in attendance discussing the key issues to a UK wide audience.”

The debates usually start with the leaders giving an opening statement, but tonight it will go straight into questions.

Some of the topics expected to be covered are Scotland’s recovery from the Covid pandemic, climate change and another independence referendum.

Ms Sturgeon is currently in the lead in the polls while Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and Tory leader Douglas Ross are fighting for second place.
