Republicans BOO Biden for attacking Trump's tax cuts

Chuck Schumer is forced to stop his standing ovation as Republicans BOO Biden for attacking Trump’s tax cuts that ‘helped the one percent’: President insists again no one earning over $400,000 will pay more taxes

  • Biden brought up former President Trump’s $2 trillion tax cut
  • He said it benefitted the top 1 per cent – causing Republicans to boo
  • Majority Leader Schumer stood in anticipation of the applause line
  • He awkwardly sat down amid the GOP boos – then stood up again

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer jumped too early on an applause line in President Biden’s State of the Union speech – and found himself standing all alone as Biden ripped the Trump tax cuts and got booed by Republicans.

Schumer stood awkwardly in the House chamber as Biden brought out one of his tougher domestic lines, in a speech where he saved his toughest language for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Biden was touting parts of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan like its child tax credit of up to $3,600 per child that lifted people out of poverty, even as his Build Back Better agenda to continue it has stalled.

‘And unlike the $2 Trillion tax cut passed in the previous administration that benefitted the top 1% of Americans, the American Rescue Plan helped working people—and left no one behind,’ Biden said.

Cameras inside the chamber focused on Schumer, and he got caught standing with his hands ready to clap.

But he was the only one standing as Republicans booed the reference to Trump and his tax cut, passed under a Republican-controlled Congress.

Then Schumer stood and clapped along with other Democrats when Biden finished the line and praised the law pushed through by Democrats, in a moment that soon rocketed across social media.

‘And it worked. It worked. It created jobs. Lots of jobs,’ Biden said.

Biden tried in vain late last year to get Congress to enact his BBB plan, which would have extended and expanded the child tax credit and other provisions.

He touted brisk economic growth as the nation’s economy climbed out of a pandemic hole last year, focusing his shots on GOP economic policy in a speech where he also tried to stress ‘unity’ issues like infrastructure.

‘But that trickle-down theory led to weaker economic growth, lower wages, bigger deficits, and the widest gap between those at the top and everyone else in nearly a century,’ Biden said.

Another jab also failed to identify Trump by name. ‘The previous Administration not only ballooned the deficit with tax cuts for the very wealthy and corporations, it undermined the watchdogs whose job was to keep pandemic relief funds from being wasted,’ Biden said.

He said that in his administration, ‘the watchdogs have been welcomed back,’ and said a new Justice Department task force would focus on pandemic fraud, drawing applause.

He touted elements of his plan to boost child care and long-term care subsidies and provide universal Pre-K.

‘And under my plan, nobody earning less than $400,000 a year will pay an additional penny in new taxes. Nobody,’ Biden said – on a night when Republicans blasted the administration for rising inflation.

The Trump tax cuts slashed individual and corporate tax rates. An analysis by the Tax Policy Center concluded that the top 1 per cent would get 8 per cent in 2018, rising to 25 per cent in 2025, and 83 per cent in 2027.

Biden’s tax slams came in a speech where he called for the nation to set aside its divisions over covid, and got bipartisan backing for his tough talk on Russia.

He also called for cooperation on ending the opioid epidemic, boosting support for mental health and veterans, and ending cancer – a longtime cause of his.
