A TV presenter giving out a post-match presentation at an AFL match on the eve of Anzac Day has been mocked online after an embarrassing on-air blunder broadcasted live across Australia.

Bridget McIntyre was the master of ceremonies for the post-match presentation following Saturday night’s blockbuster between the Melbourne Demons and reigning premiers Richmond Tigers in front of 56,000 fans, with thousands more viewers watching at home.

McIntyre was given the job of announcing the winner of the prestigious Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal for the best player on ground.

The medal is named after seven-time premiership player and coach, Australian Football Hall of Fame identity and World War I veteran Frank Hughes who represented Richmond before and after the war and later coached at the Demons.

What happened next threatened to overshadow the Demons’ upset victory and a moment McIntyre would rather forget.

‘On behalf of both the Melbourne and Richmond football clubs, we are very proud tonight to present the inaugural Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal,’ McIntyre began on Channel 7’s coverage.

‘Would you please join me … well I actually don’t know who the winner is. I think I need to know the winner. Who is it?’

She laughed awkwardly as boos from the crowd echoed around the stadium and Demons players looked at each other in confusion.

Several seconds of awkward silence finally ended when someone off-camera identified the winner.

‘Oh, it’s Petracca! Christian Petracca!’ McIntyre cried in relief as the crowd erupted into cheers.

The Demons star forward came up to receive his medal presented by Hughes’ granddaughter Jennifer Allen.

‘Sorry about not knowing who that winner was,’ McIntyre said while wrapping up the presentation.

Sports fans online were among the first to weigh in on the awkward moment.

‘That was weird,’ Melbourne journalist Sam McClure tweeted.

Another added: ‘That was slightly awkward. You hope that was the correct Christian that got the medal.

‘Excellently delivered medal ceremony,’ one fan joked.

Another added: ‘Pretty sure that’s the last time she gets an MC job. Amateur hour.’

There was some support for McIntyre on how she handed the situation.

‘Can’t say I’ve ever seen a presentation where the announcer … doesn’t know who to announce. But well recovered,’ one viewer wrote.

‘What a recovery. Fellas, take note and see how a real pro handles herself. Kudos to her,’ one man tweeted.

McIntyre is an experienced television presenter who spent almost 10 years at Channel Nine and was the inaugural host of popular Victorian travel show Postcards.

She was most recently spent a decade as the face of the national Brand Power commercials campaign and is married to former Demons star Anthony McDonald, who played 104 games between 1997 and 2002.

The undefeated Demons gave Richmond their third loss of the season from six games on Saturday night.

It was the biggest AFL crowd so far this season, which will be smashed on Sunday with up to 85,000 expected for the traditional Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon.
