A popular Sydney beach will be closed for two weeks due to asbestos continuing to wash up on its shores.

The first fragments of the highly dangerous material were found back in August last year in Little Bay Beach in the city’s eastern suburbs and more traces continue to be detected.

Randwick City Council announced the idyllic swim spot would close for two weeks from Monday but would reopen on weekends.

In the week after the first traces were found, 100 more asbestos fragments were detected on the shore.

The council said while the material was ‘low-risk’, residents have been urged not to pick up anything suspicious while the investigation is underway.

‘Please do not touch, collect or pick up any material on the beach that may look like pieces of fibro sheeting,’ the council said.

‘The material may be weathered and sometimes looks like shell or rock. Signage is in place at the entrance to the beach advising beach goers.’

Authorities assured residents that any material found was being regularly removed and tested.

More to come.
