Newly released archive photos show police in action in 1950s and 60s


Furiously scribbling on their notepads, three police officers have cornered a trio of Teddy Boys.  

As they ask questions while dressed in their smart tunics and traditional custodian helmets, one of the young men seems more interested in his hair and is seen slicking it back with a comb.  

The image, which was taken in the 1950s, is one of a collection of of newly released photos showing the police in action decades ago.   

Another image shows police apprehending Dartmoor Prison escapee Trevor Davies in Tavistock on July 20, 1963, before they transfer him back to the prison. 

Officers are also seen arresting a boisterous football spectator at the FA Cup fifth round match between Arsenal and Liverpool at Highbury on February 15, 1964.

A fourth shows police holding back a crowd of Beatles super fans outside of Buckingham Palace, London, on October 26, 1965.

The incredible images, which offer a glimpse into the day to day struggles of police on the beat, have been released by the TopFoto archives.
