One person dead and two injured in New York Stop & Shop shooting as police hunt for a masked gunman who ‘fled the scene on a public bus’

One person is dead and two others are injured after masked gunman opened fire at a New York Stop & Shop supermarket this morning. 

The shooting broke out inside the supermarket in the Long Island neighborhood of West Hempstead just before 11.30am. 

Police are still on the hunt for the gunman who was seen dressed all in black and wearing a mask.

Sources told NBC that the gunman is believed to have fled by jumping on a nearby bus.

Police are urging local residents to remain indoors while the gunman is at large.  

The West Hempstead School District immediately went into lockdown following the shooting.
