House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy criticized Democrats for not censuring Rep. Maxine Waters, saying Wednesday that the decision hurts ‘George Floyd’s family, as she put the verdict of the Derek Chauvin case ‘in jeopardy.’

McCarthy spoke with Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody on Real America’s Voice and talked about how House Democrats voted to table, essentially killing, the top Republican’s censure resolution in a straight party-line vote – 216-210 – Tuesday afternoon.

‘Well you know the Democrats had an ability to condemn those types of actions,’ McCarthy said. ‘But instead they condoned it. It hurt the House of Representatives. It hurts, I believe, George Floyd’s family.’

Rep. Maxine Waters was hammered by Republicans for saying on Saturday that Black Lives Matter activists should ‘get more confrontational’ if officer Derek Chauvin was found not guilty in the killing of Minneapolis black man George Floyd last May

The California Republican said the California Democrat ‘believed there was value in violence.’

Waters traveled to Minneapolis on Saturday – where Chauvin’s trial was being held – to demonstrate alongside Black Lives Matter activists after another black man, Daunte Wright, was killed by police.

‘I hope we get a verdict that says guilty, guilty, guilty,’ she told reporters at the scene, speaking about Chauvin, who was on trial for the Memorial Day 2020 killing of George Floyd.

‘And if we don’t, we cannot go away. We’ve got to stay on the street. We get more active, we’ve got to get more confrontational. We’ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business,’ Waters said.

Republicans hammered Waters for the comments, claiming that she was inciting violence.

Democrats pointed out that many of the same Republicans defended former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the January 6 MAGA riot, which they said he incited.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries pointed to the GOP’s own set of scandals during a press conference Tuesday.

‘Kevin McCarthy should focus on his own conference, because the Republicans in the House are a mess right now,’ said Jeffries, the No. 5 Democrat in the House. ‘Lauren Boebert is a mess. Matt Gaetz is a mess. Marjorie Taylor Greene is a mess. Clean up your mess, Kevin. Sit this one out.’

It became a bigger problem for Democrats when the judge in the Chauvin trial, Peter Cahill, said Waters’ comments may be grounds for an appeal.

McCarthy pointed out to Brody that his censure resolution was narrow in scope – as it only quoted Waters and then Cahill.

‘I only put in exactly what the judge said,’ McCarthy said.

McCarthy said he believed the jury decided the Chauvin case correctly.

‘I think justice was served, I think our judicial system worked,’ he said, telling Brody he wasn’t a lawyer when the broadcaster asked if Waters’ comments were actually grounds for appeal.

‘The one thing I do understand what the judge said, was what Maxine Waters did was abhorrent,’ McCarthy answered.

He said the outcome ‘proved it worked right and well.’

‘And now she put it in jeopardy,’ he said of Waters.
