Man, 50, is fighting for life after being bitten in face by dog in attack yards from polling station in Bolton

  • Man was discovered with serious injuries to arm and face in Breightmet, Bolton
  • Police officers and an air ambulance were called to the scene at around 1.20pm 
  • Council’s Dog Enforcement Control Unit also attended. The dog has been seized
  • The attack occurred just yards away from Elderdale Community Centre
  • There, residents are voting for Manchester’s next mayor and their councillor

A 50-year-old man is fighting for his life after being bitten in the face by a dog yards away from polling station in Greater Manchester.

The man – who has not been named – was discovered with serious injuries to his arm and face in Breightmet, Bolton, and was rushed to hospital this afternoon.

Police officers and an air ambulance were called to the scene at around 1.20pm today.

The attack occurred just yards away from Elderdale Community Centre, where residents are voting for Greater Manchester’s next mayor and their local councillor.

Bolton Council’s Dog Enforcement Control Unit also attended the scene of the attack today. The dog has been seized by vets. 

Police have not confirmed who the dog’s owner is nor what breed it is.

Resident Colbert Alleyne told Manchester Evening News of the ‘chaos’ he saw when he returned home today.

He said: ‘There were police everywhere. It was chaos. I could not get in my house.’ 

A scene remains in place with paramedics and police present. Members of the public have been advised to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for GMP said: ‘Officers were called to Yewdale Gardens, Bolton, at about 1.20pm on Thursday May 6, 2021, to reports a man was being attacked by a dog.

‘NWAS and an air ambulance attended and a 50-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries to his arm and face.

‘A scene remains in place and enquiries are ongoing. The dog has been secured by PetMedics.’ 

North West Ambulance Service said: ‘An ambulance, advanced paramedic and air ambulance are currently attending an incident on Yewdale Gardens, Breightmet, following a 999 call at 13.32.’
