Loose Women stars Denise Welch and Ruth Langford pay tribute to co-star Brenda Edwards' son Jamal


The stars of Loose Women have paid a heartfelt tribute to Jamal Edwards following his death on Sunday aged 31 from a ‘sudden illness’. 

The SBTV founder was the son of Loose Women panellist Brenda Edwards and helped launch the careers of Ed Sheeran and Jessie J. 

Denise Welch, Ruth Langsford and Christine Lampard led the tributes on Monday as they sent their well wishes to Brenda.

Taking to Twitter, Denise wrote: ‘My heart aches for my friend Brenda. I can’t bear it. Jamal Edwards was a wonderful son and brother.’

Actress Kate Robbins commented on Denise’s post and said: ‘Oh dear Lord. This is terrible,’ to which Denise replied: ‘It’s just a nightmare Kate’. 

Denise posted another tribute to her Instagram account, writing: ‘Jamal Edwards was a wonderful son and brother. Our friend Brenda lit up when she spoke about him and they were incredibly close. 

‘Jamal had achieved so much in his short life and my heart breaks for Brenda, Tanisha and all who loved him’

Ruth took to Instagram and wrote: ‘My heart is breaking for my friend @brendaedwardsglobal after the loss of her amazing son Jamal yesterday. I can only imagine her unbearable pain. Grief is the price we pay for love. 

‘The @loosewomen will wrap our arms around her and try to fill her with all the strength we have. My condolences and love to you my darling friend, Tanisha and all your family. RIP Jamal. X’.  

Christine shared a photo of Jamal alongside her husband Frank Lampard and wrote: ‘Utterly devastated. The most remarkable young man.

Charlene White – who often helms the ITV daytime show – tweeted: ‘Your light shone so brightly that it touched so many of us, impacted the lives of many more, and changed the game forever.

‘And, you are my Brenda’s son. There are no words to describe her heartbreak, our heartbreak, now that your light has gone. Sometimes life is terribly unfair.’

Posting on Twitter, Katie Piper wrote: ‘Shocked and sadden to hear of the passing of @jamaledwards thoughts and prayers with @brenda_edwards and family.’

Saira Khan – who no longer sits on the ‘Loose Women’ panel – took time out from a family holiday to admit she was ‘devastated’ to hear of ‘shining light’ Jamal’s passing.

Posting a statement via Instagram Live, she wrote: ‘I have just heard the heartbreaking news that @jamaledwards has died. I am devastated for @brendaedwardsglobal and send her and her whole family my prayers and deepest sympathies.

‘I met @jalamedewards whilst filming a children’s show and was struck by his humility and passion to help kids to believe in their talents.

‘R.I.P young man. You were a bright shining light here on earth. Now you will shine brightly in the sky.’

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid also expressed her condolences on Monday’s episode, saying: ‘Our hearts go out to you Brenda and to all of Jamal’s friends and family.’

Jamal was a teenager when he decided to launch the youth broadcasting and production film SBTV to upload clips he recorded of his friends performing on the estate where he lived in Acton, west London. 

Brenda herself released a statement, saying: ‘It is with the deepest heartache that I confirm that my beautiful son Jamal Edwards passed away yesterday morning after a sudden illness.

‘Myself, his sister Tanisha and the rest of his family and friends are completely devastated. He was the centre of our world. 

‘As we come to terms with his passing we ask for privacy to grieve this unimaginable loss. I would like to thank everyone for their messages of love and support.

‘Jamal was an inspiration to myself and so many. Our love for him lives on, his legacy lives on. Long Live Jamal Edwards MBE, MBA, PHB. 

By 2014, he had amassed an estimated fortune of around £8 million and worked with the likes of Ed, Jessie J, Emeli Sande.

Musician, singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer Elliot Gleave, better known by his stage name Example, also paid tribute to the star.

In a post in Instagram, he wrote: ‘Can’t believe you’re gone. 31 years old. Can’t find the words right now.’

DJ, model and presenter Snoochie Shy, AKA Cheyenne Davide, paid tribute to SBTV founder Jamal Edwards, who has died.

‘RIP to Jamal Edwards. One of the kindest, thoughtful and all round great person. Gone way too soon,’ she wrote on Twitter.

Awards organisation Mobo has paid tribute with a post on Twitter: ‘We are deeply saddened to learn of Jamal Edwards passing. As the founder of @SBTVonline, his groundbreaking work and legacy in British music and culture will live on.

Speaking after receiving his MBE in 2014, Jamal said he started SBTV to give his friends a platform.

He added: ‘It was a frustration of going to school and everyone talking about ‘how do we get our videos on MTV’.

‘YouTube was like a year old. I was like ‘I’ve got a camera for Christmas, I’m going to start filming people and uploading it’.

‘Everyone was looking at me like ‘what are you doing, like you can compete with these major corporations’, but I think I was early enough to believe that I could make a change.’

In the same interview, he described his working relationship with musicians as ‘symbiotic’.

‘50% is the talent and 50% is the platform,’ he said.

‘I try to focus on people that haven’t got the platform. As well as getting a really well-known artist I want to get the up-and-coming ones as well.’
